What is MBBS/BDS

MBBS:-( BACHELOR OF MEDICINE and bachelor of surgery)

  • Amedical degree is a vocational, or even technical, degree awarded for studies in fields associated with medicine and surgery.
  • The word “medicine” is derived from Latin medicus, meaning “a physician”. Medicine encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.
  • Contemporary medicine appliesbiomedical sciences, biomedical research, genetics, and medical technology to diagnose, treat, and prevent injury and disease, typically through pharmaceuticals or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints and traction, medical devices, biologics, and ionizing radiation, amongst others.

The Medical Council of India is the apex regulatory body for regulating the medical education in India. The council has prescribed minimum teaching curricula for getting   MBBS degree in country. All medical colleges of India have to follow these minimum guidelines.

The minimum guideline is as follow:

  • The course of MBBS is four and half years excluding one year of internship. The first year consists of one year teaching basic science subjects – Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry with some learning of Community Medicine.
  • Second year consists of para-clinical subjects – Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine with Community Medicine.
  • Third year is divided in two parts. PART-I is of one year with subjects to be appear for exam are ophthalmology, ENT and Community Medicine. Part II is again of one year with subjects to be appear in exam are Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics.Thus once student clear all four years with all subjects named, he/she is eligible for internship.
  • MBBS the word itself has its own meaning MB- Medicine Baccalaureus which means Bachelor of surgery in Latin) and BS-(Bachelor of surgery) in English.
  • The name suggest two degree but its only one it is an undergraduate academic degree courses dealing with medicine and surgery.
  • The duration of MBBS courses is of four and half   year which include 9 semester each semester is of 6 months after this students have one year rotating internship and the candidate is elected as a doctor.
  • MBBS is suited best for those who have scientific bend of mind and want to serve humanity as a passion.
